The top residential areas in Central London are Belgravia, Knightsbridge, Kensington and Mayfair. These are followed closely behind by South Kensington, Chelsea, St Johns Wood and Holland Park. Other desirable areas are Bayswater, Marylebone and Maida Vale.
Central London is the residence of choice for many of the world's wealthy. Not only is the tax regime benign, but the quality of life in this, one of the few truly world cities, is superior to that in most other cities. With a continuous history going back 2000 years, its recent role as the imperial capital of the world's greatest empire, the broad diversity of its rich cultural offerings and its place as one of the most international of cities, Central London has a reputation that is hard to beat. Only New York can claim to be a rival. Given the current Mcarthyesque climate in the US, even many liberal Americans are choosing to live in Central London. London's place as one of the three leading financial centres in the world and as a major air transport hub provides added attractions.
Whereever one is in Central London, one is surrounded by history. Not the history of a dead and buried civilisation, but one that has had a direct bearing on shaping today's world. So today's Londoner can feel part of that continuum.
Apart from the international rich list who have decided to live in Central London, the huge salaries and bonuses earned in the City of London's golden square mile, its finacial district, means that there are home grown billionaires adding to the pressure on the limited supply of properties in the prime residential districts mentioned above. And of course, there still are some wealthy members of the old British aristocracy who keep a pad in Central London.
Given this limited supply, rents for properties in Central London are one of the highest in the world.
So where should one rent in Central London? The grand old premier area of Belgravia is primarily rented by the embassies of the world's leading nations. Rich private individuals tend to prefer to rent in Knightsbridge, Kensington, South Kensington or Mayfair if they wish to be in the heart of Central London. For those prepared to live slightly further out there is Chelsea, Holland park, St John's Wood or parts of Marylebone.
