Where to buy property in London?
London is a huge metropolis, therefore when looking for a property to buy in London one usually needs to narrow one's search down to at least specific regions, if not specific areas.
The broadest division of London is north of the river Thames and south of the River Thames. The River Thames cuts across London in an east-west axis and, given its width and the limited number of bridges across it, effectively cuts London in two.
Within these two broad divisions there are further geographical regions.
Firstly, the area of Central London is extracted out of mainly London north of the river, but also a small part out of London south of the river Thames.
Then the remainder of north and south of the river are further subdivided into sub-regions on a geographical basis. These geographical divisions could be strictly topographical or, as is commonly used, by postcodes. Thus for London north of the river, the regions are clockwise west (W), north-west (NW), north (N) and east (E). For London south of the river the regions are south-west (SW) and south-east (SE).
Furthermore, London has grown beyond these London postcode areas to become 'Greater London' by incorporating parts of the 'home counties' of Middlesex, Essex, Kent and Surrey.
Drilling down further, each of these geographical sub-regions is further divided into local districts or areas. These are effectively the "villages" of London, each with its own character, that have fused to form this fantastic metropolis
Thus when searching where to buy property it is advisable to first decide on a region, if not a sub-region or even an area.
